Grow Guerrilla: a roguelike farm-defense shooter

One farmer, one gun, one old bus — and the whole of Babylon's air force overhead. Plant your crop, draft a new build every run and hold the sky through 12-stage seasons. Lose the plants and the season is over; clear it, harvest, and grow back stronger.

A satirical, fictional game for adults (18+). No real-world cultivation instructions, products or sales — just a farmer, a bus and a very persistent air force.

What it is

A tower-defense roguelite with a trigger finger

Grow Guerrilla is an arcade sky-defense game built around one rule: the season ends the moment your last plant is destroyed. You play Farmer John, standing on the roof of a painted bus with a gun, while choppers, paratroopers, crop dusters, jets, blimps and eventually flying saucers try to wreck the crop planted in front of him. You aim by dragging your thumb across the sky and fire by holding it down. That's the whole control scheme, and it's deliberately small so the game fits a phone held sideways in one hand.

The depth comes from two places. The first is gun heat. Every shot warms the barrel, and when the gauge fills the gun jams for a moment — usually right when a paratrooper is about to land. Fast guns jam in seconds if you never let go; slow, heavy guns cool in the gap between their own shots. Managing that rhythm is the core skill of the game.

The second is the roguelike build. After every cleared stage you pick one of three skills from a pool of 55, and elite stages and bosses hand out relics — 18 of them, called Jah's Blessings — that bend the rules of the run. Combine the right ones and a run that started with a modest machine gun ends with a screen-clearing machine. Your strain (six of them) sets the archetype, from the glass-cannon Sativa Haze to the plant-healing CBD Medic.

Between runs, everything feeds a long progression loop. Each season pays out Gold Bud, win or lose, which you spend in the Grow House on permanent perks, 50-level weapon upgrades, new strains, guns, relics, crew members and cosmetic bus liveries. Five chapters take the same 12-stage season to new places — a dusty desert, a smugglers' coast, the city outskirts and a midnight mountaintop — each with tougher patrols and bigger rewards.

It's also a satire, and it knows it. Babylon's police state hunts one stubborn farmer with an entire air force, and the game plays that absurdity for laughs with reggae-inflected sound, a procedural dub soundtrack and art that's drawn entirely in code. It's made for adults, it's fictional, and it's about shooting down aircraft, not about anything you could do in real life.

We built Grow Guerrilla for players who love the "one more run" pull of roguelites and the planning of tower-defense games, but want something that plays in short, one-thumb phone sessions and works without a connection.

What's in the game

Features

One-thumb shooting

The gun aims toward your thumb and fires while you hold. Settings add an Aim Line guide and an Always Firing accessibility option for playing without holding.

Gun heat and jams

Every shot builds heat; a full gauge jams the gun for 1.6 seconds. Fast guns are burst weapons, heavy guns cool between shots, and a whole family of skills and relics bends the rules.

12-stage seeded seasons

Intro waves, elite stages at 4 and 8, shops after stages 3, 6, 9 and 11, and a boss at 12. Enemies and weather are rolled from a seed, so every season is different but fair.

55 draftable skills

Six lanes — offense, gun handling, projectile modifiers, defense, economy and active abilities — plus build-defining epics like Chain Reaction, Glass Cannon and Pacifist Patch.

18 relics

Jah's Blessings change how a run plays: One Love makes every fourth shot free and doubled, Dreadlock Coil turns overheating into a damage buff, Second Wind replants your first lost plant each stage.

Six strains

Each strain has its own stats and signature: Sativa's hit-streak fire rate, Indica's damage per living plant, Hybrid's kill-fuelled Momentum, CBD Medic's regeneration, Purple Haze's damaging trails and Autoflower's 8-stage speedrun.

Eighteen guns

From the AA Machine Gun to the Spread Shotgun, Babylon Shredder, Bong Rocket and Prism Arc's chain lightning. Every gun has a 50-level Armory upgrade track.

A sky full of enemies

Twenty core enemy types with real behaviors — drones that tag plants for air strikes, blimps that jam your HUD, UFOs with abduction beams, cloaking saucers — plus signature units in each later chapter.

Five multi-phase bosses

The Chief's Gunship, the Crop-Duster Ace, Blimp Command, The Mothership and the Federal Harvester, each with weak points and three escalating phases.

11 stage modifiers

Night raids, crosswinds, downpours, searchlights, blackouts and more change how each stage has to be played. Later stages always roll at least one.

The Grow House

Spend Gold Bud on long perk tracks, weapon levels, crew members with their own stat kits, quality-of-life upgrades, and cosmetic liveries, tracer colors and plant varieties.

Daily Challenges

Daily Seed, Rush Hour and Boss Gauntlet: the same challenge for every player each day, with a fixed strain, capped attempts and a Gold Bud bonus — and they never use fuel.

Getting started

How a run works

  1. Gear up on the loadout screen. Pick a chapter (The Homestead to start), a strain and a weapon, then tap START. A normal season uses one can of bus fuel; the tank holds five and refills one can every 15 minutes.
  2. Defend the crop. Drag to aim and hold to fire. Watch the heat gauge under your plant pips in the top-left corner, and let go between waves so the gun is cool when the next one arrives. The HEAT × number beside the stage counter is the stage's difficulty, not your gun.
  3. Draft after every stage. On the "Jah provides" screen, pick one of three skills, or spend 12 buds on a reroll. Buds drop from enemies and only last for the run.
  4. Visit Jah's Shop. After stages 3, 6, 9 and 11, spend buds on extra skills, a relic, a plant heal or a replant, or a weapon battery that adds a second auto-firing gun beside the field.
  5. Beat the boss at stage 12. Clear elite stages 4 and 8 for guaranteed relics along the way, then take down the season boss to win.
  6. Spend your harvest. The summary screen pays Gold Bud for every run, plus a bonus for a win. Spend it in the Grow House, claim finished missions, and go again. Beating a chapter's boss unlocks the next chapter.

Who it's for

Made for short sessions with long-term goals

Roguelite fans

If you like drafting a build from random offers and finding the combo that breaks a run open, there are 55 skills and 18 relics to experiment with — and some combinations that cancel each other out.

Commuters and coffee breaks

One thumb, landscape, offline. The game checkpoints at each stage intro, draft and shop, so if you have to close it mid-run you can pick up where you left off.

Upgrade grinders

Perk tracks run up to 100 levels deep, every gun has 50 Armory levels, and eight crew members are waiting to be recruited in the Grow House. There's always something to save for.

Daily players

Three daily challenges, three daily and three weekly missions, a streak bonus and an offline stash that fills while you're away give you a reason to open the game each day.

Arcade shooter players

Paratroopers you can drop by shooting their chutes, tear-gas canisters you can pop mid-arc, telegraphed strafing runs and boss weak points reward aim, not just stats.

Players who like satire

An absurd, over-the-top premise played straight: a reggae farmer versus a paranoid police state's entire air force, with original code-drawn art and a dub soundtrack.

Privacy and offline play

No account, no server of ours, playable offline

Grow Guerrilla is a single-player game that runs entirely on your phone. There's no registration or login, and we don't operate a backend that receives your data. Your progress — unlocks, upgrades, statistics, settings and purchase entitlements — is saved in the app's private storage on your device, and the game plays fully offline.

The only data processing happens through optional Google services. If you choose to sign in to Google Play Games, you get achievements, leaderboards and a cloud save of your progress tied to your own Google account; the game receives only your Play Games player ID and display name. Rewarded ads are served by Google AdMob, and no ad is loaded unless you tap an ad button; where the law requires it, you'll see Google's consent form first. Purchases are handled by Google Play, so we never see your payment details.

The app requests a single Android permission, internet access, which is used only for those optional services. It's intended for adults and isn't directed at children. Read the full Grow Guerrilla privacy policy for details on retention and deletion.

Common questions

Grow Guerrilla FAQ

Is Grow Guerrilla free?

Yes. The game is free to download and the full campaign — five chapters, six strains, five bosses, every skill and relic and 15 of the 18 guns — is earned by playing. Purchases and rewarded ads are optional.

Who is the game for?

Adults. It's a satirical, fictional shooter with drug references in its theme, and it carries a mature content rating. There are no real-world instructions, products or sales in it.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Runs, upgrades and daily challenges all work without a connection. You only need the internet for optional ads, purchases and Play Games cloud saves.

Is there an iPhone version?

Grow Guerrilla is currently available for Android on Google Play.

Do purchases make you stronger?

Mostly they save time: Gold Bud packs and the License's double harvest speed up progression you can also earn by playing. The exception is the three premium guns, which are store-exclusive and sit at the top of the arsenal.

How long is a run?

A season is 12 stages, or 8 on the Autoflower strain. Rush Hour is six stages and the Boss Gauntlet three bosses. If you have to stop, the game checkpoints at each stage intro, draft and shop.

What happens when I lose?

The season ends when your last plant is destroyed, but every run still pays Gold Bud and Farmer XP based on how far you got, so losses still move your progression forward.

Do I need an account?

No. Signing in to Google Play Games is optional and adds achievements, leaderboards and a cloud save.

Can I move my progress to a new phone?

Yes, if you sign in to Google Play Games: your save is backed up as a Play Games saved game. Without sign-in, progress lives only on the device and is removed if you uninstall.

What are Daily Challenges?

Three limited modes that reset at midnight UTC — Daily Seed, Rush Hour and Boss Gauntlet — with a fixed strain, capped attempts and a Gold Bud bonus. See the daily challenges guide.
